# Cast

PREMIUM and ULTIMATE feature. Build clear entries for recurring people, companions, pets, and other characters.

Use **Cast** for **who someone is**. A Cast entry gives a recurring person or animal a recognizable identity that stays consistent across scenes.

Good candidates include your companion, your roleplay identity, a friend, a relative, a colleague, a neighbor, or a pet. You do not need an entry for every person briefly mentioned.

## What belongs here

| A pet's identity and habits               | Pip is a gray cat who naps beside the map-room stove.            |

Use a name instead of an unexplained “he,” “she,” or “they,” especially in books with several characters. Distinguish similarly named people in the title or description.

## Create a Cast entry

1. Open **Cast** and select **+ New**.
2. Use the person's name as the title.
3. In **How \[companion] finds this**, name the person and their distinguishing role.
4. Add a few stable details in Content.
5. Select **Save**.

**Title:** `Ellis Reed`

**Description:** `Ellis Reed, harbor archivist, tide charts`

**Content:**

## What belongs somewhere else

* **World:** where Ellis works and how the archive is arranged.
* **Relationship:** the trust, boundaries, or promises between Ellis and Rowan.
* **Facts:** a small specific preference, when it deserves its own entry.
* **Chronicle:** what Ellis did during a particular visit.
* **Open threads:** a question Ellis has promised to answer.

A short relationship cue in Cast is useful for identification. Keep the full evolving dynamic in Relationship so you have one clear place to update it.

## Keep identities current

Edit the existing Cast entry when you correct a name, learn an established background detail, or intentionally change a character's ongoing role. Creating a second entry for the same person can leave conflicting identities in the book.

Separate **stable traits** from **today's mood**. “Mira is generally patient” is a useful Cast detail. “Mira is frustrated because the chart is missing” usually belongs to the current situation or an event.

A lorebook entry does not replace the companion's separate character-creation settings. Use [Custom Characters](/create/custom-characters.md) for the underlying character profile and Cast for continuity within this book.

## Pin or lock it?

Pin a short core identity entry if you want it consistently available. Lock it if you want to prevent your companion from changing that established identity. You can use either control independently; [pins and locks](/lorebooks/pins-and-locks.md) explains both.

Before saving, check: can a reader identify the person, distinguish them from the other cast members, and understand why they matter without reading the whole chat?
