There is no file-import step in this walkthrough; create and save the entries in the editor. ## A complete starter book: Asterfall **Book name:** `Asterfall · Lantern Festival` **Companion:** Mira, a lighthouse keeper. **Your role:** Rowan, a mapmaker. This small book establishes the characters, a setting, a relationship, a preference, and an unfinished goal. The screenshots throughout these guides use this setting. ### Overview: Premise ``` Rowan is a mapmaker in the fictional coastal town of Asterfall. Mira Vale keeps the Lantern Lighthouse. They are longtime friends preparing for the Lantern Festival together. ``` ### Overview: Open threads ``` - Find the missing north-coast chart before the festival. - Ask Ellis whether the archive has a spare copy. - Meet Mira at the lighthouse to finish the route. ``` ### Cast: Mira Vale **Title:** `Mira Vale` **How Mira finds this:** `Mira Vale, lighthouse keeper, brass compass, Asterfall` **Content:** ``` - Mira Vale is Asterfall's lighthouse keeper. - She carries a brass compass from her mentor. - She is patient, observant, and quietly curious. - Rowan is her friend and fellow mapmaker. ``` ### Cast: Ellis Reed **Title:** `Ellis Reed` **How Mira finds this:** `Ellis Reed, harbor archivist, tide charts` **Content:** ``` - Ellis Reed maintains the harbor archive. - They lend old tide charts to Mira and Rowan. - They prefer visitors to return borrowed maps before dusk. ``` ### World: Lantern Lighthouse **Title:** `Lantern Lighthouse` **How Mira finds this:** `Lantern Lighthouse, Asterfall coast, map room, silver bell` **Content:** ``` Layout - Ground floor: kitchen and a shelf of tide journals. - Middle floor: a map room with a round oak table. - Top floor: the lantern and a narrow lookout. House rule Ring the silver bell before entering the map room. ``` ### Relationship: Mira and Rowan **Title:** `Mira and Rowan` **How Mira finds this:** `Mira and Rowan, friendship, teasing, mapmaking promise` **Content:** ``` - Mira and Rowan are longtime friends and mapmaking partners. - Gentle teasing is welcome; public embarrassment is not. - Mira calls Rowan “North Star” in private. - They promised to ask before changing each other's maps. ``` ### Facts: Rowan's tea preference **Title:** `Rowan's tea preference` **How Mira finds this:** `Rowan, favorite tea, mint, no honey` **Content:** ``` - Rowan prefers mint tea without honey. - Rowan dislikes very sweet drinks. ``` ### Chronicle: let the events happen first Do not create future Chronicle scenes as setup; this section has no **+ New** button. Start the conversation and let scenes develop. If you later need to correct an existing scene, this is the kind of concise account to aim for: > Mira and Rowan compared tide charts in the lighthouse map room. They noticed the north-coast chart was missing. Ellis offered to check the harbor archive. They agreed to meet again at the lighthouse before the festival. ## Optional keywords for the starter book After saving an entry, open **Keywords** below Content if you want to customize its generated list. Use one term or phrase per line, with at most eight in each entry. These are choices you can adapt, not required settings: | Entry | Example keywords — enter each on its own line | | ---------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------- | | Mira Vale | `Mira Vale` · `lighthouse keeper` · `brass compass` | | Ellis Reed | `Ellis Reed` · `harbor archive` · `tide chart` | | Lantern Lighthouse | `Lantern Lighthouse` · `lighthouse` · `map room` · `silver bell` | | Mira and Rowan | `Mira and Rowan` · `North Star` · `mapmaking promise` | | Rowan's tea preference | `Rowan` · `mint tea` · `tea preference` | For example, paste this into the Lighthouse entry's **Keywords** dialog and select its **Save** button: ``` Lantern Lighthouse lighthouse map room silver bell ``` Common English singular and plural forms match automatically, so `map room` also covers `map rooms` without another line. A saved custom list stays in place when Content changes. If the subjects or names change, update the list yourself. [Managing keywords](/lorebooks/keywords.md) explains this separately from the title, description, and Content fields. ## Maintain the book after a scene Suppose Ellis finds the chart and Rowan agrees to return it after the festival: | Part of the book | What to change | | ---------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Open threads | Remove “find the missing chart” and “ask Ellis.” Add “Return the borrowed chart to Ellis after the festival.” | | Chronicle | Check that the discovery and agreement are recorded accurately when the scene appears. | | World | Update only if you learned something lasting about the archive or chart. | | Relationship | Update only if the exchange established a lasting agreement or changed the relationship. | | Facts | Correct a specific detail if it changed; do not duplicate the entire scene. | | Custom keywords | Review the lists on changed entries. Replace outdated names or terms and save each list in its Keywords dialog. | One event does not require editing every section. Change only what it actually affects. ## Adapt the structure to everyday conversations A book does not need a fictional world or dramatic storyline. For an everyday-style example with fictional people: | Part | Example | | ------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Premise | Taylor and Jules are friends who chat about creative projects and daily routines. | | Cast | Casey is Taylor's friend from the community garden. | | World | The Corner Studio is a shared workspace with a quiet room upstairs. | | Relationship | Taylor likes encouragement and prefers direct, gentle feedback on unfinished work. | | Facts | Taylor enjoys sketching birds and prefers unsweetened tea. | | Open threads | Ask Jules for feedback on the next sketchbook page. | | Chronicle | An account of a conversation about finishing the first page. | Keep only the sections that help your actual conversations. There is no requirement to invent background material to fill a book. ## Reusable field templates Replace every bracketed item before saving. These are writing aids, not special commands. ### Person ``` Title: [Person's name] Description: [Name], [role], [distinctive subject] Content: - [Name] is [role and relevant background]. - [Name] is recognizable by [useful stable detail]. - [Name] is connected to [other person] through [connection]. ``` ### Place or setting rule ``` Title: [Place or rule name] Description: [Place], [location or setting], [key features] Content: - [Where it is and what it is for.] - [Important layout or capabilities.] - [Rule, condition, and any relevant exception.] ``` ### Relationship ``` Title: [Person A] and [Person B] Description: [Names], [relationship], [main dynamic] Content: - [Current established relationship.] - [Preferred tone or style of interaction.] - [Boundary or ongoing agreement.] ``` ### Fact ``` Title: [Subject and topic] Description: [Subject], [specific topic], [useful terms] Content: [One clear statement, with a small number of related details if needed.] ``` ### Open thread ``` [Who] still needs to [action] before/after [relevant condition]. ``` ## Final check before you start Make sure your descriptions identify the right subjects, the Content contains the actual details, and current information does not contradict itself.
