Lorebooks

PREMIUM and ULTIMATE feature. Build, edit, and organize what your companions remember, with complete illustrated guides and fictional examples.

Available on PREMIUM and ULTIMATE. Lorebooks are included for all subscribers on these plans. On FREE, your companions use the Memory System.

A lorebook is an editable collection of information your companion can use in conversation. It brings together the people in your story, its setting, your relationship, useful facts, and a record of what has happened.

A companion book holds one companion's ongoing continuity. A Universe Book holds reusable starting material for any companion; each chat started from it gets its own companion book.

You can let your companion add to the book as you chat, write entries yourself, and review suggested changes. Use it for everyday conversations, an ongoing roleplay, or a fictional world you want to keep consistent.

Availability

Lorebooks are available to all PREMIUM and ULTIMATE subscribers. See Subscription Tiers & Limits to compare plans.

On FREE, companions use the Memory System instead, and Lorebook controls are not shown. Existing PREMIUM and ULTIMATE chats that still use the older memory list can move to a lorebook with Upgrade memory. Gaining access to Lorebooks does not automatically convert an existing chat.

Lorebooks work in private chats on both plans. Group Chats still require ULTIMATE.

Fictional example

What is the overall situation?

Rowan and Mira are longtime friends preparing for a festival in Asterfall.

What still needs to happen?

Find the missing north-coast chart before the festival.

Who is this?

Ellis is the harbor archivist who lends out tide charts.

Where are we, and how does this setting work?

The lighthouse has a map room; visitors ring a silver bell.

How do these people relate to each other?

Mira and Rowan are friends who enjoy gentle teasing.

What specific detail is true?

Rowan prefers mint tea without honey.

What happened?

Mira and Rowan discovered the missing chart during a map-room visit.

One event can lead to several different kinds of information. A festival invitation is a past event in Chronicle; an unanswered invitation is also an Open thread. Keep the event's account in Chronicle and the outstanding action in Open threads.

Books and chats

A companion book belongs to your conversations with a particular companion. More than one chat with that companion can use the same book, so edits affect every chat using that book. A separate book gives a different storyline its own lorebook content.

In a group chat, each companion has their own book selection. Choosing a book for Mira does not give Ellis that same book. See sharing and group examples.

Universes work through independent copies. Later edits to a Universe do not update books already made from it, and chat activity does not change the original Universe. Learn when to share a book and when to start from a Universe.

Find the right guide for your screen

On PREMIUM or ULTIMATE, open Lorebooks to browse your library, or use Open Lorebook in a chat that already uses one. If your existing chat shows Upgrade memory, follow the upgrade guide. The controls shown depend on whether the chat already uses a lorebook.

If you still see the older memory list with HIGH, MEDIUM, and LOW importance, see Memory System. Those importance levels are different from a lorebook's pins and locks.

Desktop and phone layouts differ. Your companion's name appears where these examples say Mira.
