Build, edit, and organize what your companions remember, with complete illustrated guides and fictional examples. {% hint style="warning" %} **Early testing — not generally available.** Lorebooks are currently in early testing. These instructions apply only if Lorebooks have been enabled for your account for testing. Features and screens may change. {% endhint %} A **lorebook** is an editable collection of information your companion can use in conversation. It brings together the people in your story, its setting, your relationship, useful facts, and a record of what has happened. You can let your companion add to the book as you chat, write entries yourself, and review suggested changes. Use it for everyday conversations, an ongoing roleplay, or a fictional world you want to keep consistent.

## Availability during early testing Lorebooks are **in early testing, not a generally available feature**. Publishing these guides is not a public launch announcement and does not mean Lorebooks are enabled for every account or chat. The walkthroughs below describe the version being tested. Only follow the setup, editing, and upgrade steps if you already have Lorebooks enabled for testing. If you do not see Lorebook controls, continue using the [Memory System](/get-started/memory-system.md); missing Lorebook controls alone do not indicate a problem with your account. These guides do not announce a general-release date. A festival invitation is a past event in Chronicle; an unanswered invitation is also an Open thread. Keep the event's account in Chronicle and the outstanding action in Open threads. ## Books and chats A book belongs to your conversations with a particular companion. More than one chat with that companion can use the same book, so edits affect **every chat using that book**. A separate book gives a different storyline its own lorebook content. In a group chat, each companion has their own book selection. Choosing a book for Mira does not give Ellis that same book. [See sharing and group examples](/lorebooks/managing-books.md). ## Find the right guide for your screen If Lorebooks are enabled for your account for testing, open **Lorebooks** to browse your library, or use **Open Lorebook** in a chat that already uses one. If your existing chat shows **Upgrade memory**, follow the [upgrade guide](/lorebooks/upgrading-memory.md). Availability and the controls shown can depend on whether your account and chat have access to lorebooks. If you still see the older memory list with HIGH, MEDIUM, and LOW importance, see [Memory System](/get-started/memory-system.md). Those importance levels are different from a lorebook's pins and locks. {% hint style="info" %} Desktop and phone layouts differ.
