# Your First Lorebook

PREMIUM and ULTIMATE feature. Set up a small, useful lorebook and try it in a conversation.

Start with a short Premise and a few accurate entries. You can expand the book as your conversation develops.

This walkthrough uses **Rowan**, a fictional mapmaker, and **Mira**, a fictional lighthouse keeper. Replace them with the identities and setting you want to use.

## 1. Open the correct book

On PREMIUM or ULTIMATE, select **Open Lorebook** in a chat that uses them. You can also open **Lorebooks** and select a book from the library.

Check the book name and companion on **Overview**. Check the chat count, too: changes will apply to the other chats that use this book.

If you have no book yet, check the memory options when creating a chat. When the lorebook option is available, you can name the first book there. To bring an older chat's memories into a book, use [Upgrade memory](/lorebooks/upgrading-memory.md).

If you want to reuse an existing setting, select **Universe Book** in the new-chat form and choose a [Universe](/lorebooks/universe-books.md). The chat receives its own copy; the steps below then apply to that companion book. Choose the companion's books instead when you want to continue a story in an existing book.

## 2. Write the Premise

On **Overview**, select **Edit** beside **Premise**, enter the starting situation, and select **Save changes**.

> Rowan is a mapmaker in the fictional coastal town of Asterfall. Mira Vale keeps the Lantern Lighthouse. They are longtime friends preparing for the Lantern Festival together.

This tells Mira who you are, where the story takes place, and what is already established. Save detailed biographies and room descriptions for their own entries.

## 3. Add your first entry

1. Select **World**.
2. Select **+ New**.
3. Enter **Lantern Lighthouse** as the title.
4. In **How Mira finds this**, enter: `Lantern Lighthouse, Asterfall coast, map room, silver bell`.
5. In **Content**, enter the details below.
6. Select **Save** and check for **Saved**.

The short description tells your companion what the entry is about. Content contains the information you want remembered. Both matter; a title alone is not a complete entry.

The saved entry now has a **Keywords** button below Content. You can keep its automatically generated list, or open it to customize up to eight words or phrases, one per line. For this place, `Lantern Lighthouse`, `map room`, and `silver bell` are useful examples. Save keyword edits in that dialog. [Learn how to manage keywords](/lorebooks/keywords.md).

## 4. Add a person and a useful fact

Repeat the same process in **Cast** for Mira's identity and in **Facts** for Rowan's tea preference:

You can leave other sections empty until you have something useful to add. For a fuller starting book, use the [complete example](/lorebooks/examples.md).

## 5. Add one Open thread

On **Overview**, edit **Open threads**, then select **Save changes**:

> Find the missing north-coast chart before the Lantern Festival.

This is unfinished business. When the chart is found, remove or update this thread so it does not keep appearing as an unresolved task.

## 6. Continue the conversation

Return to the chat using this book and try a natural message:

> “Mira, let's head to the lighthouse map room. What should I do before going inside?”

Or:

> “Could you make my usual tea while I finish the chart?”

These are examples of using the information, not guaranteed scripts for the reply. If a detail is missed, check the selected book and entry, then use the [recall troubleshooting steps](/lorebooks/troubleshooting.md#my-companion-is-missing-a-detail).

## 7. Check new additions and suggestions

As you chat, return to Overview's **waiting on you** panel. Open an item and inspect its contents:

* **Accept / Dismiss** reviews a proposed edit to an existing entry.
* **Keep / Discard** reviews a new entry your companion has already added.

You now have a starting situation, a place, a person, a preference, and an unfinished goal. Add more when the story needs it.
