# Troubleshooting & FAQs

Early testing (not generally available). Resolve missing details, incorrect entries, save errors, book-selection problems, and common lorebook questions.

Start by checking the **companion and book name**. A correct entry in a different book will not give the current chat that book's continuity.

## My companion is missing a detail

1. Open the lorebook **from the affected chat** and check its name.
2. Search the book for the detail.
3. Open the entry and verify that Content actually includes the information.
4. Check the short description. Name the subject and topic explicitly.
5. Open **Keywords** below Content. Check for useful names or phrases, and update any outdated custom keywords. [See keyword examples](/lorebooks/keywords.md#choose-useful-keywords).
6. Look for contradictory entries or an outdated Premise.
7. Check whether the correction is still an unaccepted suggestion.
8. Save any corrections and continue the conversation with a clear reference to the topic.

If the information matters throughout nearly every exchange, consider a short [pinned entry](/lorebooks/pins-and-locks.md). Pinning everything is not necessary, and no entry guarantees a particular reply wording.

**Example:** If Mira misses the silver-bell rule, confirm the chat uses the Lantern Festival book, open `Lantern Lighthouse`, and check both the Content and its description. A natural follow-up such as “What is the map-room visitor rule?” gives a clear topic.

## My companion remembers the wrong thing

Find the entry and edit it directly, then **Save**. Check related entries, Premise, and Open threads for the same outdated assumption.

If the wrong text appears only under **Suggested**, dismiss that suggestion. If it is a new entry, discard it when it should not exist, or keep it and correct its fields.

A locked entry can still be edited by you. If you want to allow future companion changes, unlock it after correcting it.

## I cannot save an entry

| “That name is already used here” | Open the existing entry or choose a distinct title.                                          |
| A length warning                 | Shorten Content or split the subject across entries. Check formatting and counters.          |
| The entry is an older version    | Copy any unsaved text you need, reopen the book, and apply your changes to the latest entry. |
| “Entry no longer available”      | Reopen the book and check whether it was removed.                                            |
| “Save failed”                    | Keep a copy of your edits, check your connection, and try again.                             |

A disabled Save button can also mean there are no changes to save. For Premise and Open threads, use their own **Save changes** button.

## I cannot edit or save keywords

Save a new entry before looking for **Keywords** below Content. The dialog allows up to **eight** words or phrases, one per line. Save stays disabled if the list has not changed or is over the limit. Chronicle chapters and arcs have read-only lists; open an individual scene to edit its keywords.

The keyword dialog saves its list separately from the entry's text. If a save fails, preserve your keyword draft and follow the error message. For an older-version message, copy any unsaved work, reopen the book, and edit the latest entry.

If the list does not update after you change Content, check whether you previously saved custom keywords. Custom lists are kept through later text edits and need to be updated separately. [Managing keywords](/lorebooks/keywords.md) covers these cases in detail.

## I cannot pin another entry

Check the **Pinned** space on Overview. Unpin something less essential or shorten the entry, then try again. Unpinning does not delete it. See [pin space](/lorebooks/pins-and-locks.md#when-there-is-not-enough-pin-space).

Chronicle entries have no pin control. Put lasting information from a scene in the appropriate other section if it needs a pin.

## I cannot change a chapter or arc

Chapters and arcs are organized automatically. Expand them and edit the **scene** whose account needs correcting. Chronicle has no manual **+ New** button and no editable date field.

## A review disappeared, but something is still waiting

A new entry can also have a suggested rewrite. Dismissing the rewrite can reveal the original **Keep / Discard** review. Check the remaining card's heading and actions.

Accepting a proposed edit and keeping a new entry are different decisions. [Reviewing changes](/lorebooks/reviewing-changes.md) explains what is already in use and what is still proposed.

## An entry is missing from the list

Clear the search, check the section filter, and use the list's page controls. For Chronicle, expand the parent chapter or arc. Search the whole book if you do not remember the section.

In a group chat, also check which companion's tab is selected. If you find the entry in another book, check whether the chat is using the intended book.

## My new book is empty

**Start a separate book** creates an empty book. It does not duplicate the old book or import old memories.

To convert an older chat's memory, use **Upgrade memory → Create a new Lorebook**. To reuse a book you already have, choose that book instead of creating a new one.

## My old memories were not added when I selected a book

Selecting a book under **Other Lorebooks for \[companion]** is a switch without an import. A **same-memory-group** option can import this chat's history, but does not re-import legacy memories added or edited since the group's original import.

Check the [upgrade choices](/lorebooks/upgrading-memory.md#choose-the-right-upgrade-option) before trying another operation. Add or correct missing details directly in the intended book when needed.

## My upgrade is taking a long time or failed

Reopen the upgrade dialog to check progress. You can close the dialog while it works; that does not cancel it. Wait for **Done** before inspecting the result as complete.

Use **Try again** for a failed upgrade when offered. If the dialog says the chat is too large for automatic conversion, contact support as instructed. The failure message indicates that the original memories remain untouched.

## I do not see lorebook controls

Lorebooks are **in early testing and are not generally available**. If your account has not been enabled for testing, missing Lorebook controls is expected. The existence of these guides does not mean the feature has launched for your account.

If you already have testing access, confirm you are signed in and looking at the intended chat. Check whether it offers **Upgrade memory** rather than **Open Lorebook**. The controls available depend on account and chat access.

If the chat still uses the older memory list, follow [Memory System](/get-started/memory-system.md). Do not assume it has been converted because another chat already has a lorebook.

## Common questions

### Are Lorebooks available to everyone?

No. Lorebooks are in early testing and are not generally available. These guides describe the test version; they are not a public launch announcement. Confirm testing access before following or recommending Lorebook setup and upgrade steps. See [Availability during early testing](/lorebooks/lorebooks.md#availability-during-early-testing).

### Do I need to write the whole book myself?

No. Your companion can add entries and propose changes as you talk. You can also write and correct entries directly. A short Premise and a few important entries are enough to start.

### Does every section need content?

No. Add useful information where it belongs. An empty section is fine.

### Are lorebooks only for roleplay?

No. They can organize everyday preferences, recurring people, relationship details, and past conversations too. See the [everyday example](/lorebooks/examples.md#adapt-the-structure-to-everyday-conversations).

### Does editing one chat's book affect another chat?

Yes, if both use the **same book**. Different books keep their own entries. Check the chat count and book selection before making a storyline-specific change.

### Can two different companions use one book?

Book choices are specific to the companion. In a group, each companion has a separate selection. Adding a fact to Mira's book does not copy it into Ellis's book.

### Does switching books erase previous messages?

No. Book selection and message history are separate. For a fresh conversation and separate lorebook continuity, create a new chat with a new book.

### Does locking stop the companion from reading the entry?

No. A lock prevents companion changes. A pin keeps the entry consistently available. They are independent controls.

### Can I undo a deletion in History?

History has no restore control. Read deletion confirmations carefully, especially for Chronicle containers and their nested entries.

### Can I upload a lorebook file or export one from this editor?

The current lorebook interface does not offer a file import or export control. You can copy text into entries manually. **Upgrade memory** is for your existing Secrets chat memory and history; it is not a file-upload feature.

### Is a lorebook the same as a persona?

No. A [persona](/get-started/personas.md) describes who you are in conversation. A lorebook organizes the wider continuity: people, setting, relationships, facts, and events. Keep overlapping details consistent, and use separate books for incompatible storylines.

### Does a lorebook replace the Custom Character editor?

No. Use the [Custom Character editor](/create/custom-characters.md) for the companion's character profile. Use the lorebook for the information and continuity attached to your conversations with them.

### What if I switch back to legacy memory?

Your book is kept, but its entries are not copied into the older memory list. Other chats still using that book continue to use it. Review the selected memory system and book when switching again.
